WAMA Art Prize finalist

One of my seaweed paper sculptures has been selected as a finalist in the 2023 WAMA Art competition.

The WAMA Art Prize is a $25,000 national award for excellence in art inspired by nature created with or on paper, held by the Wildlife Art Museum of Australia.

Finalists will be displayed in an exhibition at Ararat Gallery TAMA, Victoria, and within WAMA’s on-line gallery, from August 19 - November 19 2023.
The major acquisitive award of $15,000 and Awards of Excellence will be announced on 26 August, 2023.
Included within the exhibition is a People’s Choice Award, available for public vote within the online exhibition on the WAMA website.

My entry ‘Tidelines’ is a small sculptural dress constructed wholly from seaweed paper. It was inspired by my love of the sea and my long beach walks collecting seaweed from the tidelines to use for papermaking. Different types of seaweed were processed separately to give different pulps, enabling the creation of ‘tidelines’ within the paper.

The delicate sculptural dress reflects the beauty and fragility of our coastal environment.
