seaweed paper dress backlit by lightbox

This work was inspired by a visit to the former Aboriginal settlement of Wybalenna at Settlement Point on Flinders Island, where the aim had been to ‘Civilise and Christianise’. Today the ghosts of Aboriginal victims haunt the empty chapel and unmarked graves. The white dress of Christian purity is now a symbol of deception and betrayal.

The work comprises two sheets of paper made from marine macroalgae gathered from the beaches around Settlement Point. It is illuminated by LED backlighting.

The lighting changes the appearance of the paper, highlighting the detail in the macroalgae fibre, and allowing the second sheet of paper to be visible, adding depth to the image.
