Lockdown movie!

Watcha Doin’ Today Web Series

Soon after the Covid restrictions started, I was approached by Loretta Farrell, an independent filmmaker from Sydney, who asked if I would like to be part of her documentary series which would follow a diverse group of artists during the lockdowns. She hoped to capture this unique period of our history through the eyes of the artists, showing the impact of Covid on their lives and work. Each artist would be required to self-film for a period of at least several months.

This sounded like an interesting project, so I agreed to participate. I previously had very little experience of filming, but I was given lots of coaching by Loretta, so I soon learnt how to do some basic shooting. I had studied photography at art school, and I enjoyed this extension of the medium.

The filming finished at the end of June, and the project will result in a short-form web series. Each episode of 6-8 minutes profiles one of the artists, who include visual artists, musicians and writers from around Australia, at varying stages of their careers.

My film was the first episode to be completed. It follows the progress of my three main lockdown projects – the making of my first life sized seaweed paper sculpture (my ‘Big Dress), my online exhibition ‘Penguin Parade’, and the development of my new website. Of course filming myself became my fourth major lockdown project.

My episode can now be viewed online.
